Niagara Falls, Canada

Dominion Power and Transmission Ltd., Hamilton, Canada

Already in 1903 Voith Siemens Hydro supplied 4 Francis spiral turbines with an output of 515 kW at a head of 79.5 m for the Niagara Falls power station located in the City of Hamilton, Canada. Two additional units were awarded to Voith Siemens Hydro in 1910 and 1911.

As a result of superior work performed at Hamilton, the Ontario Power Company ordered additional units for their new hydropower station located at the base of the Niagara Falls. This historical order for Voith Siemens Hydro provided the most powerful and largest turbines in the world at that time. Four spiral twin turbines each with an output of 8,826 kW were supplied. These were followed by three more units from 1908 through 1912 with an output of 9,047 kW at 53.4 m head.

The Niagara turbines were decommissioned in December of 1999 after 95 years in operation. Even though they are no longer connected to the grid, they are still operable.

Voith Siemens Hydro supplied another 13 generators to a station on the US side of Niagara Falls in 1950. The most recent award is the contract to rehabilitate the first stator of
14 at the Robert Moses Niagara Hydropower Station.
